Masterman Ready edition by Frederick Marryat Reference eBooks

This edition of Masterman Ready is quite old. I received my first copy of the book when I was just a boy of seven or so. I never finished reading it. Perhaps I was too young at the time. Now, I am eighty-two years old, and reading it is like beginning an adventure back into my childhood. This book has a venerable feel to it. It is no longer new and pristine in appearance. Like me, it shows signs of age and reasonable wear; but yet, it maintains its dignity as a fine old book that is worthy of any old codger's re-acquaintance after seventy or more years. I highly approve of my new/old book. The book would be a worthy addition to any shelf that also holds Treasure Island, Kidnapped, or any of the other childhood adventure classics. They don't write them this way anymore.

Masterman Ready edition by Frederick Marryat Reference eBooks Reviews

There were very funny parts, and at the end, there is a very very sad part. I would definitely be recommend this book.
Most of Marryat's books are very good reads, and this one is no exception. Essentially similar to swiss family robinson.
Print is ultra small. Even the kids gave an aversion to read it because it is so small. Giving it 2 stars since we haven’t really tried reading it yet and maybe the story will be good enough that we would be motivated to buy a normal font size version.
You can’t do any better than this in entertaining your kids with an energetic, wholesome adventure. Though the times have changed, the message has not.
Nonetheless, I found this to be one of Marryat's more entertaining novels. And, as always, you can sense the debt that later authors of sea novels owe this gentleman and his many years of experience in the RN in the earlier part of the 19th C. O'Brian's Far Side of The World provides many echoes of this text. And, typically, characterization takes second place to action. The novel's characters are far more devoutly Protestant than in other Marryat novels, and the Calvinist work ethic looms approvingly throughout.
As noted in my review of Marryat's "Poor Jack," his books are rather melodramatic by modern standards. Still, they reveal a lot about life at sea during the age of sail. This book takes place largely after a shipwreck on a deserted island - always a good premise for a story. If the disasters that befall Ready et. al. are dramatic, the island turns out to be exceptionally well-supplied for them. A good read, and much better-written than many modern stories set in the same period.
I'm a big fan of Marryat, and this is one of my top favorites. It's not as focused as life on a ship as many of his other books, but sea life does play a large role in the book. Like Children of the New Forest, it has a great work ethic and is a wonderful book for children, but it's plenty enjoyable for adults as well. It's somewhat similar to Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson, but younger readers will enjoy the fact that Marryat glosses over some of the more mundane facets of daily life on a deserted island, causing the book to move faster.
