Patricia McKillip's Bard of Bone Plain immediately stopped me in my tracks with its first word: Phelan, the name of one of my sons. I had never come across it spelt that way ever before. Phelan Clu is one of the chief protagonists in the contemporary aspects of the novel. Bard of Bone Plain alternates between events happening "currently" and those happening so long ago they are legend. The ancient storyline is preceded in each of its chapters by a few paragraphs that read like some Master's or Doctoral thesis theorizing on the events that unfold after them. Events on page 269 caught me off guard, which was a pleasant experience but the ending was a little too "all's well that ends well".Product details

I thought I'd read all of Patricia McKillips's books, and most of them many times, but I'd missed this one! I'm always amazed at how Ms McKillip creates a different world in all of her books (except the Riddlemaster trilogy, of course) with such evocative detail and descriptions, and places her very-human characters within that world. And best, how she develops a story line that solves a mystery with character and plot development throughout the book.

I loved this book! I loved the characters and how they developed throughout the story. I loved the 'lightbulbs' that went off when I figured out this or that bit that had been teasing at me, and I had to re-read it to truly figure out exactly what happened - which I have often have to do with her books; one of the things I love about them. A well arranged back-and-forthing between the present and the past, with good timing as to when they come together, and a very satisfying wrap-up. All in all one of my favorites.
A completely different way to look at time, history and human stresses. I started with McKillip's earliest work, ran down the Thome of the Erril of Sherril in a library (before the internet or ) and have had highs and lows with her works. This one was well worth having bought in hardback.
It managed to have no one be truly evil, no misunderstanding founded in a lack of common sense, and characters and resolutions I cared about. Hard to describe, but it has the trademark "beautiful, almost poetic prose" that marks the best of McKillip's novels.
One of McKillip's best! I've long been a fan of the "Riddlemaster of Hed" trilogy and this uses some of the same ideas but takes it to the next level. If you enjoy her poetic prose and her unique blend of magic, language, and music as a story trajectory, then this book is for you. Although I guessed the answer to the story's conundrum early on, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of this tale. In fact, I kept checking the reader to make sure that the story would last long enough to keep me engaged and intrigued. It did, I was, and I enjoyed every minute of reading this book, so much so that I will probably read it several more times. A totally satisfying read.
During the first few chapters I thought maybe this book wouldn't be quite as good as her others. I was wrong. I was swept away soon after and just now returned to reality's shore. I was left breathless and hungry for more of her stories. This book is good, really good. If you love bards and legends, woven together with magic and mystery, you'll love this.
The Bards of Bone Plain is just so beautiful. McKillip's writing is always so lyrical and poetic, and this one is no exception. I've read many of her novels, and Bards falls in with my favorites. I'm not going to do a plot overview because that is already there in the description of the book.
First off, like previous novels, there are several main characters, but I felt that all of them were clear and had something to add to the story. The novels switched between two different times, but the transitions were very clear and didn't cause any confusion.
The story itself was superb. In some of McKillip's previous novels it seems that the "bad guy" is somewhat ambiguous, and there isn't a lot of tension withheld throughout the novel. This one, however, felt like there was something at stake if the riddle of Bone Plain wasn't solved, and this feeling carried through until the end. There was still a certain amount of ambiguity, but it is ambiguous without being too vague It all adds to the appeal of the mystery.
The big mystery of Nairn's whereabouts and what happened on Bone Plain is weaved well from the novels beginning. I had some inkling of what the answer might be the closer I got to the end, but it was still exciting to watch how Phelan solved the riddle.
One slight issue that I had with the novel is that the ending seems a bit rushed. I wanted a few more answers about the other mysterious bard (not Nairn) and what his motivation was. I suppose, like the characters, readers are left to make their own conjecture about him. I will say, however, it was clearer than some of her other novels.
All in all, this was a great read. I was almost sad to finish it, which makes me happy. Go figure ;)
