I really loved this story! It has all the elements of a good Cinderella like tale and more...sweet heroine, handsome prince, jealous twin sister, wicked stepmother, and evil cousin. The book is well written, with fully developed, relatable characters. Ianthe is sensible, smart, and endearing, while Jason is kind and loving, with a bit of a tortured past. Ianthe, the heroine, is a twin. Her sister, Serena, is by all accounts the beauty of the duo, although Ianthe is quite pretty in her own right. Ianthe, however, has earned the unfortunate title of bluestocking which has left her a virtual wallflower. Jason, Marquess of Wyckeham, the hero, brings his younger half-brother to London for the season so he can get some "town bronze." While there the two attend a ball at Almack's. This is where Jason first meets Ianthe and Serena. Jason immediately sees through Serena's false façade to her true selfish, spoilt character. But, he is extremely attracted to Ianthe. This perturbs him to no end as he is NOT interested in getting married again (his first marriage was to a spoilt beauty and was a complete disaster). In any event, try as he might, Jason cannot resist his attraction to Ianthe. Serena's jealousy of the attention Jason showers on Ianthe is palpable and a joy to read! Try as she might, she is unable to get Jason to transfer his affections from Ianthe to herself and she succumbs to some dastardly tricks in her attempts to do so. It was nice to see her get hers in the end. Throw into the mix Jason's wicked stepmother who refuses to be supplanted as the Marchioness of Wyckeham and his evil cousin Gervais who is either obsessed with Ianthe and/or has a deep seated hatred for Jason and you've got quite an exciting tale. Needless to say good wins out over evil and Jason and Ianthe get their HEA. Altogether a very satisfying read. I will definitely read this story again! This is a "clean" romance.[Update: 3/16/2014] If you're interested in reading this book, you should know that Amazon offers a set of three of Ms. Courtenay's regency romances for about .50 cents more than you would pay for this book. The name of the collection is Regency Romance Collection from Christina Courtenay. The set includes this novella as well as "Marry in Haste" and "Desperate Remedies." IMO both of those novellas were just as excellent as this one. Furthermore, as of today Amazon is offering the set for FREE! Not sure how long that will last so grab a copy while you can.

Once Bitten Twice Shy Christina Courtenay 9781842627976 Books Reviews
Wonderful...Wonderful...Wonderful. This is the first book I have read by Ms Courtenay and indeed, it will not be the last. It has all of the elements that I very much like.
This moved very quickly, there was no long drawn out courtship and that favored both Ianthe and Jason very well and of course they do love one another. It was not a sappy or cheesy romance as some seem to be, no it was fun and a little exciting as well.
This is the story of Ianthe and Jason, Marques Wyckeham. Ianthe was the not so pretty twin. Jason had brought his step brother to town to find a wife but found one for himself instead. There were some good places in this story but the characters could have been demonstrative. It was sort of blah.......No recommendation from me.
Another great work from Ms. Courtenay. Once Bitten, Twice Shy is a wonderful intellectual romance of a wallflower and a jaded heart. With conniving sisters and mother-in-laws, justice triumphs and as the leading characters work through many hurdles to reach a balanced point in their relationship. This story is highly recommended to anyone who is looking for a short tale of romance, humor, and intrigue.
I loved this story, but I wish the author had given an epilogue to give some closure for the couple and Maybe given us a look at whether or not she gave him an heir! And maybe kicked his mother-in-law off of the property in her complicity with Gervaise. She should have gone to jail too! I wanted more romance for the couple at the end! That is why it did not get a five star rating.
I became completely absorbed in this Regency, with its well thought-our plot and interesting characters. Christina Courtenay is for me a guarantee for original plots and well-defined characters.
The evil twin sister seemed a bit out there, for being a twin sister, that is. Twins are usually close, although there are exceptions, thus the saying, 'evil twin.' But this did not detract from the story and I was led along with a liking for the hero, who seemed to have a mind of his own and was not swayed by convention or established ideas of what 'beauty' constitutes.
I look forward to many more Cortenay books.
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were well written, though the mother was obviously blind as a bat when it came to seeing the two girls for what they were.
The Hero, however, was not fooled. He read Serena right from the get-go, and focuses on Ianthe (which does not go down well with Serena.)
I was vastly pleased to see Serena get her comeuppance when the Earl she has been toying with gives her the cut direct *deeply satisfied sigh*
At 99 cents, this was a steal. Well written, with credible and very likeable main characters; a mother-in-law from Hell; and a scheming murderer in the family tree.
The pacing was good; the developing relationship between the Hero and heroine flowed nicely, Melmoth (the butler) loses his wig a couple of times, and an old murder mystery is solved.
Highly recommend it at the price.
