This was the way I was scouted - by guys with floppy hats, rumpled jacket and smoking cigars. There were no computers, radar guns, cell phones - this book describes the life of the "old school" scouts, who knew nothing but how to recognize baseball talent. The book is about a scout who drove everywhere to see a prospect. He took are real interest in some of the prospects (Mike Schmidt) and would tell them what they had to work on. Lucadello's "wall" was novel, but it identified kids who really wanted to play. This man loved baseball and had a good idea of what it would take to get to the major leagues. He was one of the best ever. In Tony's day, you might drive 200 miles to see one kid - and you hoped it didn't rain that day. Today there are regularly scheduled talent showcases/tournaments where hundreds of players can be seen over 3 or 4 days in a tournament. Scouting today is much easier; you put down numbers, not descriptions and gut feelings. Later in my life I scouted part-time for 9 years, it was during that time that I found out who he was.

It's a great read. BEWARE - the epilogue tells of his tragic death. Though I never met the man, when I read about how he died, I felt as though I had lost a good friend. Even today when I go past a ball field or see kids playing baseball - I think of Tony Lucadello.

Prophet of the Sandlots Journeys With a Major League Scout Mark Winegardner 9780137263738 Books Reviews

A hidden gem for all baseball fans. Written from a unique perspective of the baseball scouting world. One of the best books about the journey to "The Show" I have read.
This is a great but tragic story about one of the best old school baseball scouts. It's a must read for all baseball enthusiasts, particularly those who have a talented child playing the game.
The story of arguably the most successful single baseball scout ever. Sent more players to the majors than any other including Mike Schmidt and Ferguson Jenkins. A lot of "inside baseball" and especially interesting if you follow the Cubs or Phillies
A very unusual baseball book, with all sorts of deep insights on what it takes to really play the game well enough to make a difference.
Baseball, America, and life. Great book.
I discovered this book by recommendation from a comment section. I'd never heard of it, but love baseball books, so thought I'd give it a shot. In a word, amazing. It's a book you'll talk about to your friends, baseball fans or not.
This is a wonderful story of my beloved uncle. This book is a very accurate depiction of Tony Lucadello and what he thought baseball was about. It tells the story of a man who truly loved the game of baseball and embodied everything that is good about the sport. It also has many amusing stories that Uncle Tony used to like to tell about his years in baseball. Also, the book gives a look into what a great person he was- didn’t drink, smoke or curse. And he loved his family dearly. He was -and always will be -my hero! This is a must read for any fan of baseball!
