Ugly, awkward duckling turns into? Well not exactly a swan, but a sometimes naive, independent, cute woman. Posie is now grown up, works at a Salvage company and is the adopted daughter of a couple who own a German restaurant. Her school years were lousy, being in love with the "Bad Boy Biker" who broke her heart when she overheard him calling her bad names at her Prom which was a disaster to begin with. Now Liam is back in town as a widower and with a teen age daughter. Two more mismatched people there is, but maybe something can grow. Maybe even a friendship. I liked the story line very much and for the most part the characters were strong and well defined. But I found Posie's dialogue too immature and out dated. There were way too many characters to keep track of, with their own story lines intertwined in the main story. Loved the animals though. I have always enjoyed Kristan Higgins books and will continue to read her books. No one writes like Kristin Higgins. No one. Her books are filled with quirky, voice-heavy heroines who never fail to win our hearts, and I have to admit, I was dubious when I heard that this book would be written in third person. Third person tends to distance the reader from the characters somewhat, and I think that part of the charm of Higgin's books is the intense connection that she draws between the reader and her heroine through her use of first person narrative. Though I hear what the other reviewers are saying about Liam's flaws, I think that Higgin's was still able to give us a great sense of what was inside the characters' heads and I thought that Liam was all the more realistic because of the fact that he loved his first wife, and that we got to feel his fears as a single parent along with him. That true-to-life perception of the world actually made me like him all the more, because I can't imagine a man that I would want to be with who didn't still hold his first wife in his heart somewhere. I think it gave him more depth, and I thought it was great.
Posey I adored. I can't think of any author who writes a more lovable protagonist than Higgins, and Posey was no exception. The fact that she lives in the shadow of her busty, all-too-perfect cousin TV personality the BAREFOOT FRAULEIN made me giggle with each mention.
Funny, sweet, wonderful, I have a hard time imagining that anyone would regret reading this book.
The thing I loved most about this book was the heroine. Very much not your typical romance character. The hero, too, was strong but vulnerable, which I love. The scene where he has the panic attack in the elevator was brilliant. Like in most KH books, the cast of supporting characters was fantastic. Solid story, but for me, it's always the characters in a Kristan Higgins book that stand out.
Let me start by saying that I've enjoyed every Kristan Higgins romance that I've read, and while this one was good, I felt oddly detached while reading it. The pacing was good, the supporting characters were charming and funny and the author's talent for writing humor and catchy dialog was nicely showcased. But Posey and Liam? I felt no connection to these characters and couldn't detect even a hint of chemistry between these two.
When Posey was in High School she had a mad crush on the school "bad boy", Liam Murphy. Posey barely even registered on Liam's radar, although he did have a job at her parent's restaurant so they (very) occasionally exchanged a few words. Liam fell for a beautiful and popular girl, they moved to California after High School and eventually married. Posey stayed in New Hampshire and opened her own business. The story opens with Liam, now a widower, and his teen daughter moving back to town. Liam and Posey basically re-enact their High School existence Liam is the gorgeous, cool guy that women want to sleep with and men want to be like, and Posey...well, Posey is self-conscious, insecure and still susceptible to unrequited love.
Here's where I completely lost patience with Posey. While it's practically a rite of passage for an adolescent to fall madly in love despite the fact that the object of their affections barely gives them a second look, it's not so understandable when a 34 year old woman does the same thing. Posey takes one look at the grown-up Liam and (swoon!) there she goes. I guess the fact that Liam is still very good-looking was enough to win her over, `cuz I sure didn't see him putting any kind of effort into their very one-sided relationship. In fact, there's even a scene where she tells Liam that she doesn't need much from him, she loves him and will take whatever he's willing to give her. Up to that point I pretty much just felt pity for Posey, but in that scene I wanted to throttle her!
This is the first book that the author wrote that is not told in the first person. I always enjoyed her first person point of view; I feel like it added warmth to the story and helped me to identify on some level with the heroine. But I admit that I was looking forward to being privy to the Hero's thoughts. So here's what Liam thinks about, in order of importance to him (1) his daughter, specifically her safety and virginity; (2) his late wife, who was clearly the love of his life; (3) his own problems with anxiety and OCD and a very distant (4) Posey. Sigh. I felt like she was simply an afterthought, a consolation prize, and the HEA just fell flat for me - it seemed to come out of nowhere.
Bottom Line This is a plain-Jane-gets-the-hot-guy romance with a great supporting cast and lots of humor. The writing is solid and overall I did enjoy it despite a serious lack of chemistry between the lead characters. 3.5 stars.
No swearing (unless you count "Oh, Bieber" or "Holy Elvis") and no sexual content.
Very good book concerning adults who knew each other as teens. The h had a crush on the H but nothing ever came of it. He was in love with someone else. With the information that is given, I think I would have been disgusted if the H had secretly loved the H. She is younger than him and looked even younger as a teen.
As adults, the H sees the h for the wonderful woman she has become. The h sees goodness in the H that he doesn't believe but is there.
I felt it was a satisfying read.
I had a little trouble getting into this book during the first few chapters, but right after that suddenly everything started to click, and it really took off. I loved Posey managerie of animals, people, and even what she referred to as her ' Treasured Keepsakes'. Her job was odd, but then again I loved what she did and the reasoning behind it. Liam...I wasn't too sure about hm in the beginning, but slowly he showed a whole different softer, more vulnerable side of him, which made me fall in love with him even more than I first thought I would.
I really liked this story, and would highly recommend it to everyone!
