This review encompasses the entire series to some extent, although The Conquering Dark was my personal favorite. I did not expect to like the series as much as I did - I originally thought the premise was flimsy, and the characters were not to my taste. However, as the series progressed, I became more and more involved until I am now at the point that I can hardly believe the series is done. There are weaknesses to these books - character motivations are unclear, the authors have a tendency to use and discard characters and situations at whim, without giving any proper closure. I find that these weaknesses are balanced by the strengths, namely an excellent balance of an ensemble cast and unparalled world building and story crafting. None of the main points introduced in the plot were left dangling, and the book ends with a lot of promise for future installments. I sincerely hope there are future Crown & Key books. I'd most love to see at least one focusing on Malcolm, Penny and Charlotte, my favorites, whom I do think could have been developed a little better/more thoroughly. (Honestly, does Penny have ANY other emotional state other than 'excited'? It was hinted at, but I really want to see more!) If you are a fan of the authors, or steampunk adventure in general, these books are worth picking up.

interesting genre
God, I'm sorry its over. This series was one of the best I have ever read, and this was no exception. The characters are deep and complex and the plot is fast paced and exciting. Everything comes to a head, and the end will leave you speechless!
This was a fine steampunk series, a fine mix of early Victorian England, magic and alchemy, it had good characters that were for the most part well developed and a strong, multi-pronged plot that kept me interested all the way through. I'm hoping for future books to see where the authors go from here.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was very entertaining, and I liked the characters. The story was developed, and it didn't end on a horrible cliff-hanger, which I hate. I knew that there was another book (and already had it; I went ahead and bought it after I was about a quarter of the way through this one, because I knew I was going to want to read it) and was happy I could go straight into the next one. I particularly liked Malcolm, and the way his character started to change and become, well...no spoilers...

Recommended.
I noticed that some readers really didn't care for this book. For myself, I loved it. I really wasn't sure how the authors would tie all the loose ends together, but they did a slam-bang job of it. Yes, there's a lot of action happening in this one - it's somewhat exhausting just to read it!

But if you enjoy Kate and Simon's romantic and working-partner chemistry, you'll find this a very satisfactory ending to the Crown & Key mini-series. I did; these stories are keepers for my collection.
I had a hard time getting into this series at first. I usually wait till I have read the whole series and then write one review to cover all three books instead of three separate reviews as I have done for this one. The story got much better as it progressed. the second book was better than the first and the third surpasses the first two. It is an exciting story and can entrap the reader in such a way that you do not want to put it down. Some of what goes on (ok, most of what goes on) is so outlandish that it is just entertaining to even imagine this happening in real time. You get to know the characters better and wonder how they could really make this work and survive in the end. It is well written and a very good read. Read it. You'll like it, I think.
God, I love the Griffiths. I love everything they write. Every series, and every book in each, is wholly unique. The universes they imagine are incomparably original. Their books leave me breathless for more. Unfortunately, they don't write all that fast, which is probably why the books are so wonderful. There is no stinting on anything -- action, relationships, history, strategy. It's all laid out in impeccable logic.

And the gadgets -- well, the Griffiths are virtuosos with steampunk gadgets and machines. You won't find anything better, anywhere else. They seem to have encyclopedic knowledge about machinery, weaponry, poisons, and so forth.

The characters also pop off the pages as fully formed, fully realized people, who you'd recognize anywhere.

Please figure out a way to write more about these people and this universe.
