The books in the Dear America and My Name Is America series are truly amazing. I read almost all of them from the library when I was younger and bought my favorites to read again and again. Now I am 24, married, with a one year old daughter who I hope will read them as well! I even re-read them from time to time to this day.

This particular book is, in my opinion, good but not one of the best. It is surely worth reading, however. Many other reviewers have summarized it so I won't, but I will say that what makes this book stand out is that it is written from a male perspectives. Most of the novels are about females, so this makes for a fresh view while reading the "America" books.

The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins is a historical nonfiction book that describes a young man’s journey during WW II right before D-Day through his three and half months of service. When reading this journal, I imagined what my grandfather must have gone through during the war; my grandfather and Scott Collins both served in the infantry. The writer describes in horrific detail the landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day in which hundreds were wounded and killed trying to make to shore. I enjoyed his relation with his friend Bobby Joe and how they laughed together and gave each other comfort. He expressed at one point that the soldiers were fighting for their lives while the French were fighting for their souls which made me feel so empathetic for the French, like death would have been a better choice for them. Throughout the journal he chronicled his dreams, but since they were terrifying, he never wanted to go into any detail. From time to time, this book gave me a knot in my stomach. He always expressed how much it smelled like death especially from the animals because they were never buried. I loved how he included copies of his letters to his parents and a young girl he wanted to court back home in this journal. In the letters to his parents he always let them know he was “Ok.” This book reminded me of the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific where you know the primary characters and felt their pain and sorrow during their time of service.
The writer provides a vivid description of the battle fought and conversations spoken and leaving the reader a desire to know about the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone ages ten and up.
This book, My Name Is America by Walter Dean Myers, was very intriguing to me and held lots of valuable information about World War II. The author made sure to include lots of true battle hardships that these soldiers may have faced. Facts that were exemplified throughout the novel were hard to read, but very true. My favorite part about the book was that it had lots of action that took place during these battles of war. The gruesome descriptions and surprising sights that were mentioned are what informed me the most about this terrible war. Walter stated many things about the food the soldiers had, and how it was not very appealing. This made me think about how fortunate I really am. Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone that is interested in this part of history.
Neither of My boys have taken the time to read this novel. I am hoping it will make a great book report for Middle School. Great addition to the book library.
